In a recent episode of the FinanceFeeds Podcast, hosted by Editor-in-Chief Nikolai Isayev, Matt Barrett, CEO and co-founder of Adaptive, shared his insights on the inevitable shift of brokers to public cloud infrastructure. Adaptive is well-known for its open-source technology and expertise in creating bespoke trading solutions and helping firms migrate their front-office operations to the cloud.

Barrett detailed his journey from a software engineer in New Zealand to founding Adaptive in 2012. The company focuses on building institutional-grade systems for brokers, exchanges, and market operators, using a bottom-up approach with open-source software tailored for the financial services sector.

A key topic of discussion was the mass migration of trading systems to the cloud. Barrett highlighted the economic, performance, and scalability benefits driving this shift. He noted that Aeron, a high-performance, low-latency messaging protocol acquired by Adaptive in 2022, is particularly well-suited for cloud environments.

Addressing common security concerns, Barrett asserted that modern cloud providers offer robust security measures comparable to traditional data centers. He also pointed out the engineering advantages of cloud infrastructure, such as access to the latest CPUs designed by cloud providers.

The conversation included several case studies showcasing Adaptive’s work with clients like ADSS, Tradu (FXCM), EDX Markets, and Kepler Cheuvreux. Barrett described how Adaptive helped these firms build and deploy innovative trading platforms, often leveraging cloud-native solutions.

Reflecting on broker technology decisions, Barrett noted a disconnect between business strategy and technological advancements. He explained that many brokers undervalue the importance of owning their technology stack, which can offer greater customization and control.

Looking ahead, Barrett advised brokers to prepare for rapid changes in the market, driven by regulatory shifts, geopolitical events, and new asset classes. He emphasized the need for agility and frequent, smaller bets rather than large, long-term investments.

Barrett concluded by stressing that cloud migration should be seen as a strategic enabler rather than just a technological upgrade. This perspective can unlock significant business outcomes.

Adaptive provides award-winning exchange and matching engine technology that gives businesses the flexibility, control, and agility they need to stay ahead.

Whether you are establishing a new exchange or upgrading your legacy exchange technology, the approach you choose needs to meet your current demands and also adapt to future challenges. Traditional exchange technology vendors, offering SaaS or on-prem solutions, allow you to get started quickly but limitations quickly transpire when it comes to customization or innovation at pace.

  • “We can’t get on to our vendor’s product roadmap.”
  • “We have very limited control over innovation.”
  • “Their slow rate of change stifles our ability to compete.”
  • “We are being forced to upgrade – at a very inconvenient time.”

Those are comments we hear more often than not. That’s why Adaptive offers an alternative approach.

Here is how Adaptive’s open Exchange Accelerator model is different

Adaptive licenses you the source code and grants you the right to make any modifications you want to our award-winning open Exchange Accelerator platform, rather than offering a proprietary, closed, and highly prescriptive matching engine that remains under vendor control. Read on to understand more about how we make this approach work for you.

Rapid deployment: Bespoke matching engine technology in weeks

Adaptive offers a production-proven open Exchange Accelerator platform that has passed stringent security and quality audits by major financial institutions. It provides a core set of trading features out-of-the-box to get started quickly, like order handling, validation, price-time priority matching, risk management, compliance reporting, and full audit trails – while delivering performance requirements: low latency, high throughput, and reliable uptime. These foundational capabilities, available from Day 1, equip you to manage common scenarios out-of-the-box, but crucially, they’re also structured as building blocks that can be expanded and customized for more specialized needs, including 24/7 trading hours.

For example, to support new market models or to extend into new asset classes, our open Exchange Accelerator gives you the flexibility to tailor the functionality to match your unique requirements. It also includes connectivity components to enable seamless integration with external systems like settlement and reference data services, using FIX or other protocols. Adaptive’s open Exchange Accelerator: A new approach to exchange and matching engine technology
The Adaptive open Exchange Accelerator

Client ownership of IP and source code access

At Adaptive, we believe that our clients should have full control over their technology. We are for people that value differentiation via technology. That’s why our clients own the IP and can access the source code of the solutions we build with them. This ownership ensures that they have complete control over their product roadmap and the freedom to innovate independently. There’s no vendor lock-in, and clients can evolve their tech stack as they desire over time. This level of control is crucial for exchanges that need to adapt quickly to changing market conditions and regulatory requirements. By owning their IP, clients can make changes and improvements without being dependent on a vendor’s development schedule.

Flexible deployment models; cloud, hybrid, on-prem

Adaptive open Exchange Accelerator supports cloud, hybrid, and on-premises deployment models. We specialize in high-performance cloud implementations and partner with all major providers, ensuring scalability and cost-efficiency. Our hybrid solutions integrate cloud and on-premises environments, offering flexibility. This flexibility allows exchanges to adapt their deployment strategy to meet specific needs and future-proof their technology.

If you are not yet ready to deploy your exchange to the cloud, but would like to retain the option, our open Exchange Accelerator makes migration simple. Aeron, the open source technology that underpins our platform, is highly performant on-prem, in co-lo and in the cloud. It facilitates the development of high-performance, resilient electronic trading systems that deliver microsecond latency, extremely high throughput (millions of messages per second), and fault-tolerant services, regardless of where systems are deployed. Recent cloud performance testing conducted on Google Cloud and AWS demonstrated that Aeron meets or exceeds the demands of all but the lowest latency and highest throughput markets in the public cloud – affirming that with Aeron technology, the cloud’s latency and fault tolerance can rival on-premises solutions. More information regarding the performance test results can be found here.

Client empowerment

Success for Adaptive means helping our clients get to market quickly and operate independently. We train our clients’ IT departments and build alongside them until they are ready to take over. This empowerment ensures that clients can continue to innovate and evolve their technology without being dependent on a vendor. Our collaborative approach fosters a strong partnership with our clients, often lasting for years.

Exceptional Managed Service

Owning the IP and having access to the source code of your exchange has, until now, meant having software engineering talent in-house. For an exchange operator traditionally reliant on vendor-provided technology, building this capability can be intimidating. For those exchanges that wish to remain focused on their clients, and not build out an engineering or support capability, Adaptive offers a solution. We provide all the advantages of a managed platform, while you retain ownership. This optional service ensures that clients can focus on their core business while we handle the technical and operational complexities. Our managed service provides everything from routine maintenance and updates to comprehensive support for complex technical issues, as well as managing the underlying cloud or physical infrastructure provider.

Ready to transform your exchange technology?

Adaptive’s open Exchange Accelerator offers a unique hybrid approach that combines the best of both worlds: rapid implementation with cutting-edge tech foundations and a matching engine tailored to each of our client’s needs.

Empower your exchange with technology that evolves with you.

Whether you’re curious about the world of cyber resilience or looking for inspiration to level up your skills, there’s something here for you.

What is RootCon Hacking Conference and why is Adaptive attending?

RootCon is the premier cybersecurity conference in the Philippines, uniting cybersecurity professionals, tech enthusiasts, and hackers from all over the country. Founded in 2008, the name “RootCon” combines “root” (the Unix superuser) and “con” (short for conference), signifying its deep roots in the security and hacking community.

RootCon 18 was held from September 25 to 27, 2024 at the Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay overlooking Taal Lake and its active volcano, about a 2-hour drive south from Metro Manila. The conference was a hub for learning, collaboration, and hands-on experience. It featured talks, workshops, and demonstrations covering the latest trends and best practices in cybersecurity. RootCon was an interactive experience that encouraged participants to engage directly with the material.

To top it all off, RootCon offered a collection of specialized “hacking villages” which were dedicated spaces focusing on different aspects of hacking and security. We will dive into this later!

RootCon Workshop Tracks

There were two different workshop tracks during RootCon. A participant could only choose one track, as they were concurrent:

RootCon Hacking Conference - Combating Cyber Extortion

Combating Cyber Extortion: This workshop track covered ransomware’s evolution, mechanics, and tactics; covering encryption, locking, and mobile technology. It explored Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) and highlighted targeted organizations, equipping participants to mitigate this threat.

RootCon Hacking Conference - Cyber Defense Analyst

Cyber Defense Analyst (Offensive Security Defense Analyst Starter Course): This workshop track introduced key Security Operations and Defensive Analysis topics , including the NICE Framework (National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education), Windows and Linux endpoint features, and diagnosing cyber attacks through log analysis.

Day 0: The CyberDefense Analyst Training Experience

RootCon named its days as follows: Day 0 was exclusive to Human+ ticket holders, Day 1 marked the start of the talks, and Day 2 featured more talks and the awards ceremony.

Day 0 kicked off with a bang, and we received some cool merchandise: stickers, an ID badge made of metal (something you don’t see every day). I loved the stickers! They combined art, humor, and tech in a way that truly captured the hacker vibe. The packaging itself screamed creativity, and the stickers from OffSec and Kali Linux were absolutely on fire!

SOC and SIEM: Setting the Foundation

This session introduced the role of SOC (Security Operations Center) Analysts, the team responsible for monitoring and analyzing logs to defend against threats. The key takeaway was the importance of a structured approach to SIEM (Security Information and Event Management). Simply handing your SOC team a SIEM tool and saying, “Go nuts,” doesn’t work. The team needs a clear skill set, goals, and frameworks to operate effectively.

The first half of the session focused on:

  • Log Sources: Understanding logs from Windows and Linux systems.
  • Prioritization: Identifying high priority event logs and knowing what to look for first.
  • Windows Event IDs: Breaking down their structure and relevance.
  • Attack Methodologies: Analyzing logs to understand how cyberattacks unfold.

Capture the Flag (CTF) Challenge

In the second half of the day, we put our skills to the test with a CTF challenge. The scenario involved a cyber attack and our job as SOC analysts was to comb through more than 3 million log records to uncover the following:

  • The first recorded attack.
  • Tools used by the attacker.
  • Signs of initial entry.
  • Actions taken inside the system.
  • Files created or downloaded.
  • How the attacker achieved root admin access.

It felt like searching for a needle in a haystack. Initially, I was nervous since I had no prior experience as a SOC analyst. But I drew from my attacker side experience with CTF challenges from TryHackMe, thinking like an attacker while working as a defender.

RootCon Hacking Conference - CTF Platform

The setup included:

  • A VM with the ELK Stack.
  • 3 VMs as targets.
  • 1 VM simulating the attacker.

The challenge was paced exceptionally well. The lecturer and assistant lecturers provided tips and guidance, helping us understand where to start and what to focus on. These hints, based on the earlier lecture, pointed us toward key event IDs, TTPs (Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures), and attacker behaviors.

After I made some initial progress, they stepped back, allowing us to explore on our own. Slowly but surely, I began uncovering the attacker’s trail. I felt like a detective piecing together a crime by analyzing logs.

Just as the room was deep in forensic mode, chaos struck, we all got logged out of the SOC Dashboard! Someone had changed the password and locked everyone out. The lecturer, clearly amused and smiling, said “I’m gonna find you!” with a mix of friendly banter and a subtle challenge.

Once we regained access, I focused on solving the puzzles. Piece by piece, I worked through them until, to my surprise, I saw my name climb to the top 4 of the leaderboard.

RootCon Hacking Conference - Scoreboard Day 1

I was thrilled! I felt so close to winning. What started as a learning experience turned into a real competition for me. With no prior experience as a SOC analyst, I never imagined making it onto the leaderboard. By the end, I found almost all the flags, except for one. I finally ended up being on 9th place on the leaderboard.

I received a Hacker Badge and some awesome swag from OffSec. It was surreal, I had come just to learn but ended up in the top 9.

RootCon Hacking Conference - Hacker Badge

EOD Report

Day 0 was really a blast! This training was really the highlight of my RootCon experience. Reasons why I loved this CyberDefense Analyst Training:

  • Hands-On Learning: The course provided practical scenarios that allowed us to apply what we learned in real time. The hands-on labs (CTF) were particularly engaging, giving us the opportunity to work with actual logs that simulated cyber attack scenarios.
  • Expert Instruction: The trainers from OffSec were industry veterans who brought a wealth of knowledge and experience. Their insights into real world cyber threats added depth to the learning experience, giving high probability entry points of hackers and where to look.
  • Comprehensive Training: The course covered a broad range of topics essential for any aspiring Cyber Defense Analyst. From understanding Windows and Linux event logs to dissecting cyber attack methodologies, the training was both challenging and enlightening.
  • Interactive Environment:
  • With a group of like minded professionals, we engaged in discussions, problem solving, and even some friendly competition during the exercises.

Day 1 and Day 2 Talks + Key Takeaways

I woke up excited for Day 1, eager to dive into the talks and explore the exhibition booths. The previous day’s win gave me a confidence boost, and I was hoping to join the CTFs again. However, I decided to prioritize the talks, as that was the main reason I came to RootCon. The event was packed with engaging, thought provoking and sometimes downright scary talks that highlighted the fast paced and constantly evolving cybersecurity landscape. While I can’t cover every session in detail, I want to spotlight my favorite talk and mention some of the more memorable ones.

RootCon Hacking Conference 18 - The Venue

Apocalypse: The Perils of Generative AI

The most memorable session for me was Scott Jarkoff’s “Apocalypse: The Perils of Generative AI.” It tackled the profound dangers posed by AI, diving into its unpredictability, persuasiveness, and potential misuse. Jarkoff explained how AI could be weaponized for bioweapon engineering, autonomous cyberwarfare, psychological manipulation, or even synthetic reality overwrites.

One chilling example was the potential misuse of deepfakes. Imagine receiving a video call from your CEO, complete with their familiar face and voice, instructing you to take a critical and potentially damaging action. How could you verify authenticity in such a scenario? Jarkoff proposed using a company safe word – a secret, internally shared phrase that isn’t documented anywhere.

For instance, if your CEO instructed you to “destroy the production database” and he/she used the safe word “alakazam,” you would know the request was legitimate (hopefully, your CEO would never give such an order!). This talk left me a lasting impression of the vulnerabilities we face in a world of rapidly advancing AI.

More interesting talks

  • Security of CI/CD Pipelines: The main challenge in CI/CD pipeline security is not only prioritizing security but also ensuring visibility. Without a clear understanding of the attack surface, securing it becomes impossible. For instance, do you know how many jobs are currently running and whether they are legitimate or malicious? The proposed solution involves visualizing all agents and dependencies. This can be achieved by using color-coded indicators to represent critical states, such as vulnerable dependencies or failed jobs, and linking them visually for enhanced clarity and monitoring.
  • LOLBAS (Living Off The Land Binaries and Scripts) discussed techniques attackers use to evade detection.
  • Using Microsoft Products for Malware Delivery provided insights on exploiting legitimate tools to bypass defenses.
  • Securing Cyber Security Budgets gave practical advice on communicating risks in financial terms to gain organizational support. The key steps are: understand compliance and laws in your region, analyze risks, and frame arguments in business language.

The range of topics was incredible, from speakers demonstrating how they discover and report Zero-Day vulnerabilities to government affiliated professionals recounting real life stories of recent malware and ransomware attacks on government agencies. These speakers shared how they identified and mitigated threats, providing invaluable insights.

Each session added depth to my understanding of the cybersecurity world, blending inspiration with practical takeaways. This event truly enriched my perspective on the challenges and innovations shaping our field.

The Hacker Villages

RootCon offered a diverse collection of specialized “hacking villages” dedicated spaces focusing on different aspects of hacking and security:

Hardware Hacking Village

Ideal for tinkerers and DIY enthusiasts, this village welcomed all skill levels to explore microcontrollers, soldering, circuit design, IoT projects and more. The village provided a supportive environment that fostered creativity and hands-on learning, complete with tools like microcontroller dev boards, soldering equipment, and even 3D printers.

Car Hacking Village

Focusing on automotive security, this village educated attendees about how cars can be vulnerable to hacking. Inspired by similar initiatives at DEFCON (one of the largest hacking conferences in the world), it offered insights into the latest research and trends in automotive cybersecurity, featuring tools like CAN Bus hacking devices and SDR (software defined radio) equipment.

Cellular Assault Village

This area shed light on the security risks associated with cellular communications. Through demonstrations of attacks such as SMS interception and call spoofing, participants learned about vulnerabilities in cellular networks and how to protect against them.

Red Teaming Village

Designed for those interested in offensive security, this village immersed attendees in the mindset of an attacker.Personally, the Red Teaming Village was my favorite because it gave me a new perspective on hacking. The speaker was a highly skilled Red Team professional (an Offensive Security Manager at Red Rock IT Security Inc with significant progressive industry experience working with public and private entities, holding multiple industry certifications) who shared what really happens in real life scenarios, providing valuable insights into offensive security.

One of the key takeaways for me was the importance of understanding the highest probability paths to gain access, rather than just running tools and hoping for the best. Sometimes you don’t need to root or escalate privileges on every single machine, just enough to achieve your true objective.

The session also revealed tactics used by real world threat actors, such as grooming domain names or purchasing expired legitimate business domains to use as phishing infrastructure or as command and control servers. This clever approach leverages the trust and history of the domain, making attacks harder to detect and more likely to succeed. These practical insights were eye opening and underscored the sophistication of modern adversaries.

Recon Village

Focusing on reconnaissance, OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence), and cyber threat intelligence, this village provided talks, live demos, workshops, and Capture The Flag (CTF) events. It was a space for sharing knowledge about how information is gathered and used in cybersecurity operations.

Lock Pick Village

Highlighting the physical aspect of security, this village teaches the art of lock picking and the vulnerabilities of physical locks. This year’s focus was on high security locks, offering in depth discussions and hands on demonstrations.

Takeaways from the cybersecurity experience

Attending an event like this can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not deeply familiar with cybersecurity. With so much happening at once, it’s impossible to absorb everything, so having a clear goal is essential.

Lessons Learned:

  1. Set a Goal Beforehand: Decide what you want to learn or focus on before the event. This helps you navigate the schedule and prioritize effectively.
  2. Stay Focused and Prioritize: Events like this are fast paced, with multiple sessions happening simultaneously. Knowing your priorities helps avoid decision paralysis and ensures you get the most out of the experience.
  3. If you plan to attend RootCon 19 or a similar event in the future, come prepared with a clear path or focus in mind. This will help you manage the overwhelming pace, make better decisions, and maximize what you take away from the event.

A few months ago, we had the pleasure to have Kelly Charles-Collins, join us to talk globally about Bystander Intervention. Kelly, an acclaimed TEDx speaker renowned for her expertise in high-stakes communication, explored the intricate psychology behind the bystander effect and practical strategies for effective intervention.

Kelly’s insights into bystander intervention resonate deeply with our values. We strive to foster a workplace where each individual feels empowered to speak up and support others, whether addressing bias in real-time or advocating for lasting change. By integrating these strategies into our daily practices, we aim to contribute to a culture of respect where everyone has a voice and a responsibility to act when needed.

In this blog, we will delve deeper into the key insights shared during the session. We will learn what the bystander effect is, examine the psychological factors that contribute to it, and highlight actionable techniques that empower individuals to intervene in challenging situations. Join us as we explore how fostering a culture of accountability and support can improve our communities.

Understanding the bystander effect

The bystander effect is a psychological phenomenon where the presence of others discourages individuals from stepping up during an emergency situation, against a bully, or during an assault or other crime. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is for any one of them to provide help to a person in distress.

Bystander effect reasons

Why do so many people hesitate to step in during emergencies or critical situations? This hesitation stems from several psychological and social barriers. Kelly identifies four key reasons that explain why we often fail to act when action is most needed:

  1. Fear of judgement: Concerns about how others might perceive our actions.
  2. Fear of personal harm: Worry about getting hurt or facing danger.
  3. Ambiguity: Uncertainty about whether the situation requires intervention.
  4. Affinity: Lack of connection to the victim or the situation.
  5. Diffusion of responsibility: Belief that someone else will step in.

Understanding the bystander effect is only the first step toward improving bystander intervention. To combat it, we must recognize the psychological processes that often hold us back. When faced with a critical situation, people don’t typically make a conscious decision to ignore it—instead, a complex interplay of fear, uncertainty, and social cues can paralyze them.

These internal hesitations are compounded by the presence of others, creating a sense of collective inaction. Breaking through this paralysis requires not only awareness but also a clear understanding of how our minds process these moments.

This brings us to the next step: unpacking the brain’s decision-making process when deciding whether to act.

How we decide to act: the brain’s five-step process

When faced with a potential emergency, our brains quickly assess the situation through a series of steps. This decision-making process happens in moments, guiding whether and how we choose to intervene. Kelly outlined the following five critical steps:

  1. Notice the situation: Recognize that something is amiss.
  2. Interpret the situation: Determine if it requires intervention.
  3. Assume responsibility: Decide if you should take action.
  4. Choose how to help: Determine the best way to intervene.
  5. Implement the action: Act on your decision.

Strategies for Effective Intervention

Kelly outlined the “Four Cs of Bystander Intervention” to empower individuals to take action. These strategies provide practical guidance for stepping in safely and effectively:

  1. Connect: Establish awareness and presence by engaging with the victim or perpetrator.
Example: A simple “Hey, are you okay?” can signal that someone is watching.
  2. Create a distraction: Interrupt the situation to shift focus and de-escalate.
Example: Drop something, ask a random question, or call out a non-threatening comment.
  3. Call for help: Alert authorities, managers, or others who can intervene more directly.
Example: Call security, HR, or emergency services when appropriate.
  4. Capture the incident: Safely document what’s happening to support the victim or authorities later.
Example: Record a video discreetly or take detailed notes.

✨ Key takeaway: There’s no one-size-fits-all solution—every situation requires a thoughtful, adaptive approach.

Moving from Bystander to Advocate

Kelly challenges each of us to move beyond being passive witnesses, inspiring us to step into the role of active advocates. While allies support a cause in principle, advocates take meaningful action to drive change. This transformation isn’t limited to those who witness incidents firsthand—it also applies to those who learn about them later. Advocacy can take many forms: speaking up in a meeting, standing by a colleague facing bias, or simply leading by example through courageous behavior.

✨ Actionable insight: If you see something wrong, ask yourself, “If not me, then who?”

Conclusion

Kelly’s session was a powerful call to action, reminding us that the responsibility to intervene extends beyond grand gestures—it’s about the small, everyday choices we make to stand up for what’s right.

By understanding the barriers that hold us back and embracing practical strategies like the Four Cs, we can each play a role in creating safer, more inclusive spaces. Whether it’s speaking up in a meeting, offering support to someone in need, or simply showing empathy in a tense moment, our actions ripple outward, shaping a culture where courage and compassion thrive.

At Adaptive, we are committed to creating an environment where respect and accountability are not just ideals but lived realities. To reinforce this, we have relaunched our Anti-Bullying & Harassment policy and created a dedicated reporting channel, ensuring that individuals have a safe, accessible way to voice concerns, seek support, and drive meaningful change. Furthermore, our leaders will shortly be undertaking Bystander Intervention training. These initiatives reflect our belief that true inclusion requires not only awareness but also clear action and resources that empower people to speak up without fear.

Each of us has a role to play in shaping this culture. Whether it’s addressing inappropriate behavior in the moment, advocating for policies that protect vulnerable voices, or simply listening with empathy when someone shares their experience, our everyday actions matter. When we choose to act, no matter how small the gesture may seem, we contribute to a larger movement of courage and compassion.

Together, we have the power to move beyond silence and truly make a difference.

  • Partnership with Rapid Addition enables Adaptive to integrate comprehensive FIX capabilities within its custom trading technology platforms

  • Aeron®-based Rapid Addition platform allows for seamless integration

London, February 4, 2025Adaptive, the experts in custom trading technology solutions, today announces a partnership with Rapid Addition, a leader in financial messaging protocols.

Rapid Addition’s scalable FIX platform is capable of handling thousands of connections and offers support for all versions of the FIX protocol as well as custom rules of engagement. The partnership will enable Adaptive to deliver best-in-class FIX solutions to clients seeking comprehensive counterparty connectivity and order management workflow within their custom trading technology platforms.

By leveraging Rapid Addition’s FIX platform, Adaptive can build bespoke front-office trading systems with complex, global, high-volume connectivity requirements beyond the capabilities of standard FIX engines, creating more comprehensive, agile and robust solutions for capital markets clients.

Clients are increasingly seeking to assemble ‘best of breed’ solutions to gain competitive edge and improve their responsiveness to regulatory change and margin pressures. By working with open technology and agile vendors that align with in-house capabilities, firms can implement more flexible and cost-effective alternatives to legacy solutions. This collaboration will enhance Adaptive’s ability to deliver highly configurable and scalable front-office systems that enable firms to simplify counterparty FIX onboarding and order routing workflow.

The partnership is made possible as Rapid Addition’s platform is underpinned by Aeron, the open-source messaging and clustering technology developed by Adaptive, allowing seamless integration between both companies’ platforms.

Mike Powell, CEO, Rapid Addition, said: “FIX has been fundamental to enabling the growth of electronic trading, however, counterparty connectivity still creates challenges for many organisations. This partnership means we can help Adaptive’s customers simplify client onboarding and seamlessly integrate order flow when building custom front office trading systems. Leveraging Aeron has helped us to deploy large-scale, highly resilient connectivity solutions to many leading financial organisations, and with this closer collaboration we aim to deliver even more value to our mutual customers.”

Matt Barrett, CEO and co-founder, Adaptive, said: “As firms increasingly look to differentiate through technology, ensuring best-in-class connectivity and order management is essential. Partnering with Rapid Addition was therefore a no-brainer – by combining our platforms we are enabling our clients to access new sources of liquidity and market data via enterprise-grade FIX capabilities. Our clients can rest assured that they not only have best-in-breed proprietary technology, but also the FIX connectivity needed to streamline counterparty onboarding, adapt to specific client rules, simplify workflows and, ultimately, scale.”

Paul Weiss, CTO, Adaptive, said: “Aeron technology is specifically designed to help even the most complex of capital markets firms build fault-tolerant, high-performance trading technology successfully. As Rapid Addition’s platform is built on Aeron technology, we share the same technological building blocks – there are therefore huge synergies between our businesses. Our Aeron expertise and Rapid Addition’s FIX expertise gives clients a greater depth of knowledge and new capabilities that will make a meaningful difference to their businesses.”

This partnership underscores both companies’ commitment to delivering enterprise-grade FIX solutions that meet the evolving demands of the electronic trading landscape.

The Adaptive journey: how it all started

For financial services businesses, a lot can happen in just over a decade. Initially, we collaborated to build a bespoke FX single dealer platform for a large European bank. Since then, we founded Adaptive, a firm that embodies the spirit of collaboration and empowers clients to take control of their technology and innovation. Adaptive’s journey reflects not only the evolution of our own business but also the broader market trends.

Over a decade ago, in 2012, Adaptive began as a professional services consultancy, helping capital markets firms build custom technology and solve front office complexity through expert consulting, complete custom builds, and staff augmentation. Our USP was clear: leveraging our business domain and technical expertise to enable clients to keep control of their IP, differentiate and break free of vendor lock-in.

Despite the magnitude of change since then, our core mission – transforming capital markets through technology – has remained the same. Just the means of achieving it have evolved.

The shifting landscape of financial technology

In the early days, proprietary technology was still the preserve of enthusiasts – namely dominant incumbent firms with large budgets and an appetite to outmanoeuvre the competition using technology. Investing in the development and design of their trading technology allowed them to trade faster, and smarter while tackling specific client needs. Most other firms relied on off-the-peg vendor solutions or legacy technology.

In a relatively short time, this model has been turned on its head. Bespoke trading technology is today for the many, not the few. Transformative technologies have converged, know-how has deepened and barriers to entry lifted [stay tuned, we’ll talk about the cloud later] – driving the evolution of our business and the financial services sector overall.

Technological convergence drives differentiation

Adaptive’s story reflects the electronification of markets and the evolution of trading technology strategies across banking, asset management and market infrastructure. Reduced cost, increased accessibility and a greater understanding of the value of trading technology among senior decision-makers have been instrumental to this change.

There have been many drivers of our evolution – but two stand out.

  1. Technology accelerators:

Rather than building from the ground-up every time, we designed a proprietary platform that can be leveraged to rapidly build a wide range of bespoke solutions – from execution venues, to matching engines and broker platforms. We called this technology Hydra.

Why did we, a consultancy, develop a proprietary platform like Hydra? We found that we were repeatedly building the same non-differentiating elements around resilience, latency, throughput and market connectivity. To streamline this process, we rolled these common components into our own tech by creating Hydra as a development accelerator for trading platforms.
Over the years, Hydra has allowed for faster delivery of bespoke trading technology, de-risked builds, has been trialed and tested by dozens of firms and saved significant costs. Crucially, this accelerator significantly reduces time to market and makes building differentiated proprietary trading tech possible.

  2. The acquisition of Real Logic in 2022:

The Real Logic team are the originators and architects of the revolutionary low-latency, highly resilient and open-source technology, Aeron. The acquisition has allowed us to fuel this powerful open-source technology and take pole position in deploying it in innovative new ways – especially with the sight of capital markets firms and exchanges moving to the cloud and requiring the best high performance, fault tolerant infrastructure out there.

Open-source technology has harnessed the hive mind of global developers to create possibilities and solutions that were not possible a decade ago. Cloud technology has also vastly increased the computing power available to firms across the board – removing the need for cumbersome on-premises systems and easing delivery.

A combination of these factors has vastly increased the scope of what we can achieve and has reduced the cost and time taken to deliver complex trading systems. They have transformed how sophisticated financial services firms think about their technology and make our firm what it is today.

Domain expertise meets world-leading technology – the Adaptive of today

Over our history, demand for proprietary solutions has increased. We have combined our ability to accelerate projects with acquiring and building technology foundational to capital markets to set our business apart. Now, our deep capital markets expertise can be summarized in four key areas:

  1. Trading in the cloud: Cloud forms the future foundation of the capital markets technology toolkit and we guide firms at every stage of their cloud journey to de-risk and accelerate cloud transformation. Partnering with the major hyperscalers, running regular cloud performance tests of our Aeron tech and having delivered numerous cloud and hybrid implementations, we enable firms to navigate inevitable disruption.
  2. Bespoke trading technology: In an industry where differentiation is key, we help firms turn their trading vision into a reality. With multi-asset expertise, full-service capabilities and an established track record, we can deliver complete front-to-back solutions to production, in a fraction of the time.
  3. Architecture modernization: A web of intertwined legacy or vendor solutions are holding many firms back. Adaptive can help modernize for scalability, performance, and security looking at tech stack modernization and infrastructure refresh.
  4. Consulting services: Whether clients are looking to modernize, innovate, migrate or integrate, we can deliver on their strategy and help firms navigate capital markets complexity.

As proprietary trading technology reaches pragmatic parity with vendor solutions and firms are increasingly looking to move their trading operations to the cloud, we, at Adaptive, are on the front line of a revolution in markets and trading technology.

In this exciting new era, we are evolving as rapidly as the businesses we serve. To mark this new chapter, we have launched our new brand and website – reflecting our heritage, the evolution of our identity and our future. Where will we be ten years from now? It is hard to tell – but what we can predict for certain is that we will continue to pre-empt and adapt to changing needs – harnessing new technologies and helping our clients to stay two steps ahead.

22 January 2025 – Adaptive, the experts in custom trading technology solutions, today announces strong growth in 2024, with a 69% increase in product revenue, a 10% rise in overall revenue, and the acquisition of a diverse range of new clients. This growth is driven by industry demand globally for proprietary trading technology solutions as well as Adaptive’s Aeron technology. Adaptive additionally launched its new brand to reflect its evolving business and offering.

Over the past year, as well as growing clients and revenue, Adaptive has bolstered its leadership team, expanded industry partnerships, delivered new technology offerings and embarked on a company-wide rebrand. The firm has also continued to invest in Aeron – the low-latency messaging and clustering technology used by firms globally to build resilient, performant trading systems. This investment includes the development of further open-source capabilities, Aeron tooling and multiple premium components as well as the Aeron developer community.

Key 2024 highlights include:

  • New brand: The new brand and website, launched today, aims to reflect the evolution of Adaptive from capital markets consultancy to provider of custom trading platforms, combining deep domain expertise with world-leading technology. Since the firm was founded in 2012, it has evolved and grown, adding new expertise areas, including cloud trading, developing proprietary technology accelerators and acquired Real Logic, the architects of Aeron, in 2022. The new brand identity reflects the firm’s broader offering.
  • Expanding product offering and cloud partnerships: In response to growing industry demand for cloud-native solutions, Adaptive expanded and deepened its cloud partnerships with the major hyperscalers; offering Aeron Premium on the Microsoft Azure marketplace and publishing cloud performance reports on Google Cloud and AWS. Adaptive also launched new components for Aeron Premium, including Aeron Transport Selector, Aeron Insights and Aeron Data Retention Regulator.
  • Aeron Community MeetUps growth: Adaptive hosts Aeron Community MeetUps across North America and Europe, during which Aeron users and developers share knowledge and applications of the technology. In 2024, participation at the MeetUps grew significantly with over 600 people registering from nearly 200 companies, including numerous guest speakers from the digital assets, investment banking, fintech, hedge fund and interbank payments space.
  • Team growth: Adaptive grew its overall headcount by nearly 5%. This was driven by significant growth in the product team (up by 35%) and the regional Manila team (up by 32%), underscoring the firm’s commitment to delivering innovative tech solutions and support globally. The firm also bolstered its commercial team with key new hires.

Matt Barrett, CEO of Adaptive said: “2024 has been a year of milestones for Adaptive. As well as growing our revenue, client base and headcount, we have made several strategic investments in our capabilities – deepening our offering and ensuring that we can continue to support our clients in staying two steps ahead in fast-changing markets.

“The hard work of our team over the past twelve years has culminated in the business that we have today – a business that excels in developing proprietary technology accelerators and complex trading platforms, while deepening our partnerships with major cloud providers. This is why we are proud to unveil our new brand – reflecting our heritage, evolution and continued commitment to transforming capital markets through technology.”

Looking ahead to 2025, Adaptive plans to deepen its capabilities and continue its investment in Aeron and the Aeron Community.
